Preparation: This is the part where you get the goodies together. Once you are completely prepared there will be no holding you back.


Setting Up: Here we make the dry mix, the etching bath and show you how to apply environmentally safe ground to a plate.

Creating a line plate: With your safe ground on the plate and the magic copper sulphate mix you get busy with the etching needle.

Creating Tone: An amazing aspect of copper sulphate etch is the gorgeous rich tones, with plenty of oomph, you can master easily.


Stopout Etch & floor polish: In this interesting exercise we show you how to create an image by stopping out the negative spaces.


Stopout Etch Sharpie Pen: A humble Sharpie pen, a little sticker and masking tape manage to evoke  the Blue Nile.



Stopout Etch with Crayon: Wax crayon can create intriguing marks & textures especially with the addition of Copha.

Stopout Etch High Flow Acrylic Paint & Crayon: Drypoint, crayon used in the first plate, High Flow paint & crayon second plate.

Collagraph to add Colour: The collagraph plate enhances an existing etching plate and brings this mediocre print to life.

Do I need an Etching Press?

An etching press is always going to be the best, but there are other methods of printing these plates.
  • Printing with a pasta machine
  • Printing with a craft press for example the SUNLIT machine

Do I have to be online at certain times for lessons?

You have access for one year and you can go at your own pace.  We find that online instruction and community discussion is a great way to learn.

How will I get help?

We will be with you answering your questions on the members only Private Facebook Group.

What materials do I need to gather for the course?

You will receive a full list of materials required with videos once you join.  Some of the specialised things you will need are;
  • Acrylic rubber waterproofing paint that is safe for fishponds.
  • Copper sulphate/sulfate or bluestone
  • Aluminium plate
Otherwise there are a number of items you can buy from hardware and art stores.

Can I trim these plates myself?

Yes if the plate is .05mm thick and you have a metal based paper guillotine.
